They want someone honest enough to see what's actually between them, and patient enough to let the story show itself. The look before he notices. The hand on the small of your back. I love light more than almost anything. The way it falls. The way it gives one side of a face away and keeps the other for itself. The way it makes an ordinary room look like a memory. When I show up to your day, the first thing I do is look for it. Where it's coming from. Where it's going. What it's about to touch. Light alone isn't beautiful. Light is beautiful because there's dark beside it. Stories work the same way. The good ones have weight on both sides. So that's how I see your day. A real story, two messy people making something more beautiful together than either of them is alone.
That's what I'm looking for. The breath before the doors open. The quiet between you and your father. The look across the table after the toasts. Those are the photographs. The ones where the story and the light are both true.
